Mercury Outboard Motor Maintenance

Mercury outboard motors are well-engineered machines, but they need regular attention to deliver the reliability they are capable of.

Oil changes. Mercury recommends the first oil change at 20 hours on new four-stroke models, then every 100 hours or once annually. Use Mercury-approved 25W-40 four-stroke marine oil.

Gear oil service. Mercury outboard motors have a lower unit gearcase that takes 80W-90 marine gear lube. Change it annually. If it comes out milky or shows water contamination, have the seals inspected immediately.
